LA through the eyes of Michael and Teresa

First we would like to apologize for our last posts abrupt ending. We seem to have lost control of the Ipad... We had high hopes of getting to day 4 but we do have a very early wake-up call tomorrow morning as we will be headed to Dolores Mission early in the morning to beat the LA traffic! We will be sure to let you know all about it. Good night for now! Michael Ising and Teresa Spanel University of Dayton Go Flyers! D...A...Y...T...........OOOO...N Dayton Flyers!

LA from the eyes of Michael and Teresa.

Since this is the first time the two of us are blogging, we will give you a run-down of the past 4 days. So, get comfortable, grab a caffeinated drink and maybe even your favorite  popcorn... for those emotional ones, grab some tissues! Two months ago, we received the exciting, unreal news that we would be spending a week together in LA. We really had no idea what was in store for us.  Day 1: Our flight departed at 7am. This is where the overcoming fears began seeing as it was Teresa's first flight! But we made it after the one hour interrogation from the cops and Teresa's lost luggage on what seemed to be a toy plane.... Just kidding! Except for the airplane part.. it was very small. We moved onto our next flight feeling like pros! We got on the plane in 16 degree weather and got off in 60 degrees. HELLLLOOOOO Los Angeles! We had a very enriching and enjoyable lunch with April Risteff (a UD grad!!) It was great to feel the UD Marianist spirit all the way in Cali. April told u...

A Real Eye Opener

Aloha Everyone! It's me, Martin. Hope everyone is doing well. Today was definitely a real eye opener, hence the title. Today, I rode in Mo's care with Kristeme, Makena, and Teresa. There was "A lot of Hawaii in that car." haha. I was appointed co-pilot with the directions. At one point during the ride, I had the GPS, Mo's phone, and paper directions. It was fun. I will leave it at that. Our first place we went to was Pho 87 in Chinatown. I was excited because back in Hawaii, I ate Pho, which is Vietnamese soup with rice noodles, almost once a week. It makes me feel warm inside, both physically and emotionally because me and my family always had Pho back in Philadelphia. It was fun to be able to sit down with everyone in a place I was very used to and was able to tell other's what they may like. It was also fun to see everyone trying new and different foods. We also then met Fr. Ted, who was very warm in his greetings to everyone as we introduced ourselves. He ...

Precious Moments

I'll just start by saying I have NEVER blogged before so I'm a little nervous about it right now. Also, sorry I didn't blog before like I planned. I didn't have any open computer. I guess I'll start from the beginning since I couldn't before. On Saturday, when we first met everyone, it was a bit overwhelming, meeting so many new people at one time. I really wanted to remember everyone but I knew it probably wasn't gonna happen in the first night. However, I did enjoy spending time together getting to know everyone a little.  On Sunday, it was my first time at a mass in a language other than English. It was an interesting experience for me. What I I really enjoyed was spending time with the brothers. Being at the brother's house was really comfortable and it just felt like being at a family member's. It was really nice talking to them. Today was another awesome day.  Ryan, Amy, and I had lead for the morning prayer. Although we planed out what we were...

A Day at The Midnight Mission

Image
A Day at The Midnight Mission             Throughout this morning, I was very excited about what we would be doing today.  We were told that we were going to visit the Midnight Mission and I didn’t know what to expect, but I told myself and talked to God that I am going to be open about whatever it is we would do today and I prayed that he would guide me throughout this whole entire day to help me understand his purpose of why he placed me at this place and time.              To start off my journey at the Midnight Mission, here is a little background that I got from the Midnight Mission website:             “In 1914, Tom Liddecoat, nicknamed “father of the poor” opened the doors of the Midnight Mission as refuge to the men of Skid Row.  A successful businessman and lay minister, Liddecoat would serve a meal a...

One Passion

One Passion I’m so glad to be in LA experiencing new moments with great people. LA has some similarities to San Antonio so I feel very comfortable here. The first two days have been full of warmth, hospitality, friendship, understanding, and food! Occasionally it takes some time to develop a strong relationship with others; however, the group here has bonded so quickly. Before we even met each other, we had something that connected us together: Mary. Mary has and will continue to be interwoven into our lives. I adore the Marianists, but I fully realized why when we went to the West Hills Marianist Community. The Marianists fully exude the charisms. I spoke to 4 Marianists and learned so much. I had such a wonderful time and wished I could have spent more time hearing their words of wisdom. It has been so wonderful so far and I can’t wait for the next couple of days! Day 1: I'm a street person.

January 6, 2013             Today’s adventures began in our Duarte, California home at Santa Teresita. We began the morning with a reflection of expectations of our universities and ourselves. Each of us, from our respected university and different backgrounds and upbringing, expressed different expectations, goals and anxieties for this Marianist University Immersion.             One of my profound events of today’s activities was meeting and interacting with the West Hills Marianist Community. We were given the opportunity to grow in fellowship and family spirit over a meal with each other, the community and their guest. I learned more about individuals and their life on a more personal, one-to-one basis. The quality time spent was true, genuine and in the moment.             Principal, Catholic Charity volunteer, tutor, mentor an...
